My Approach to Helping

Do you or a loved one struggle with major depression, anxiety, and/or mood disorders? Have you felt misunderstood or dismissed by professionals in the past? Are you hoping to find a counselor who will listen without judging, provide guidance, information, and treatment based on needs you identify together? If you want to work with a counselor who believes in your ability to grow, improve, repair relationships, and live a meaningful life, my approach could be a good fit for you.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, and Certified Telemental Health Counselor. I earned my Master of Science degree in Mental Health counseling from San Diego State University. I work with adults living with mental health challenges including anxiety, mood disorders and personality disorders and specialize in Recovery-Based and Person-Centered therapies. I use Rogerian principles, Motivational Interviewing, CBT, ACT, SFBT, and Narrative Therapy, as well as other modalities, to assist my clients in discovering their strengths and identifying practical steps toward the life they seek. I also specialize in working with family members who are supporting loved ones with serious mental illness.

“Just because no one else can heal or do your inner work for you, doesn’t mean you can, should, or need to do it alone.”

~ Lisa Olivera

Services I Provide

Services also known as modes or types of mental health care sessions can be given in a variety of formats, including:

  • Individual Therapy & Counseling: This therapy involves only the patient and the therapist. Sometimes called psychotherapy or talk therapy is a process through which a client works one-on-one with a trained mental health clinician in a safe, caring and confidential environment.
  • Family Counseling: Because family is a key part of the team that helps people with mental illness get better, it is sometimes helpful for family members to understand what their loved one is going through, how they themselves can cope, and what they can do to help.
  • Telehealth: Also known as teletherapy, generally, refers to individual psychotherapy or talk therapy delivered through technology like video conferencing.

Client Concerns I Treat

Mental health crises range from the worries we all experience as part of everyday life to traumatic mental health crisis or serious long-term conditions. A mental health crisis is a difficult life situation where a person’s coping strategies do not work. People in crisis feel helpless and distressed, they feel like they are loosing control over their life.

I am trained to help people experiencing a crisis and can teach skills and strategies to more effectively manage crisis situations. Some of my client concerns and mental health crisis & disorder specialties include:

Types of Therapy

Psychotherapy, also referred to as talk therapy, psycho-social therapy, counseling, or, simply, therapy, is the primary method for treating mental health problems by talking with a mental health provider. The goal is the help an individual better understand their mental health and teach strategies and tools that manage unhealthy thoughts and behaviors.

While there are many approaches to psychotherapy, there is no single approach that works for everyone. A  therapist may use a blended approach, sampling techniques from several different types of psychotherapy. The kind of psychotherapy a person receives depends on the unique needs. Below are some of the types of psychotherapy I utilize.

  • Acceptance and Commitment (ACT)
  • Coaching
  • Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
  • Compassion Focused
  • Culturally Sensitive
  • Family Systems
  • Mindfulness-Based (MBCT)
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Multicultural
  • Narrative
  • Person-Centered
  • Positive Psychology
  • Solution Focused Brief (SFBT)
  • Strength-Based
  • Telemental Health Counseling

Therapy Groups

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy that aims to help people manage mental health conditions or cope with negative experiences and behaviors. One of the goals of group therapy is to bring people who share similar experiences together.

Meeting other people recovering from or working through similar issues helps people realize that they are not alone. Group members and therapists can help each other by sharing information and offering advice. Group members can support, reassure, and help each other improve throughout the treatment. Below are the groups I lead:

  • Youth 3-17 years of age
  • Young Adults 18-25 years of age
  • Parents
  • Grandparents
  • Nontraditional caregivers
  • Co-parenting
  • Children with incarcerated parents
  • Children with extensive trauma experiences
  • Post incarceration adults

Industries & Communities Serves

Community can be defined in many ways, but when simplified down to its most important element, community is all about connection. Community is not just an entity or a group of people, it’s a feeling. It’s feeling connected to others, feeling accepted for who you are and feeling supported.

We’re social beings, and we are not meant to live in isolation. Community is critical for us to thrive, especially for someone with mental illness who is already experiencing the common symptoms of loneliness and isolation. Below are some of the communities I work with to help provide a sense of belonging, support and purpose.

  • Gay Allied
  • Lesbian Allied
  • Racial Justice Allied
